Anne Whelan

Anne Whelan joined the BDC Board of Directors in June 2016.

Ms. Whelan has almost 15 years of experience as an entrepreneur growing a small family business into a diversified multi-million dollar company.

She is President and CEO of Seafair Capital Inc., a group of companies specializing in healthcare and business support services as well as in industrial and safety supplies. Ms. Whelan took over management of her mother’s home care agency in 2002, expanding the business to include operating entities in industrial, real estate and residential care for children.

Ms. Whelan previously worked in a number of community development and support organizations in both Canada and the U.S. Her primary career focus was in employment and business development, and later in recruitment and human resources.

She currently serves as a director on the board of directors of CSA Group, Newfoundland Power, the Newfoundland & Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association (NOIA) and the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. She is a former board member of Argentia Management Authority, Accreditation Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council.

Ms. Whelan has been recognized for her leadership and entrepreneurship at the national level. She was named CEO of the Year by Atlantic Business Magazine in 2014, and RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in the growth category in 2010. She received the Newfoundland & Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) Award of Excellence for Entrepreneurship in 2013 and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contribution to home care in 2012.

Ms. Whelan holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and an MBA degree from Memorial University in St. John’s. She also completed advanced studies in Alternative Dispute Resolution from the University of Windsor and holds the ICD.D designation from the Directors Education Program of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business.
