Duchess Bake Shop, an Edmonton bakery and cafe specializing in high‑quality French‑inspired baked goods, decided to build on its growing reputation by publishing a cookbook.
To launch the self‑published cookbook in time to meet the holiday demand, the business needed funds to place a bulk printing order.
Referred to BDC by an accounting professional, the shop’s owners found the help they were looking for.
A BDC Xpansion Loan provided high‑ratio financing for the cookbook launch plus additional working capital to purchase packaging such as printed boxes—all in time for the Christmas rush. “Within days, we had the funds we needed,” says owner Garner Beggs. The loan included deferred capital payments and the option to re‑advance repaid portions.
By the new year, the cookbook had sold out, and has since won several awards. The publication has helped increase Duchess Bake Shop’s brand recognition and provided a launching pad for future growth. With advice from the BDC’s advisory services team, Duchess Bake Shop is now planning its expansion.
In fact, thanks to the sound guidance provided by BDC’s expert consultants, Duchess Bake Shop’s owners are confident in their ability to tackle their future growth plans and projects.
“We’ve had a great experience working with BDC,” says Beggs. “They are behind us, pushing us to succeed and to reach goals we could have only dreamed of before.”
