The State of Corporate Venture Capital in Canada

Corporate venture capital (CVC) is a key element of a healthy venture capital (VC) ecosystem.

Co-authored by BDC Capital and Deloitte Ventures, this inaugural report aims to provide a dependable account of CVC activity in Canada from 2019 to 2023.

While corporate involvement in venture capital (VC) is gaining momentum in Canada, too few domestic corporations are capitalizing on these opportunities. During that period, only 6% of Canadian corporations with over a billion dollars in revenue actively participated in direct VC investment, compared to about 40% of companies in the U.S.

Increasing corporate participation in the VC ecosystem would help the Canadian businesses become more innovative while helping start-ups with commercialization and access to capital, thus helping catalyze growth for the Canadian economy.
