The Entrepreneurial Spark of Canada’s Self-Employed

In 2024, 70,000 Canadians became self-employed, a significant resurgence after a drop during the pandemic. Today, nearly 2 million Canadians work for themselves.

Many of these individuals are eager to hire employees and grow their businesses, putting them on the path to entrepreneurship. Our analysis shows that they could contribute about 213,000 business openings in one year, adding 0.8% to Canada’s GDP through their hiring activity.
