Gillian Elias has served as a senior economist for BDC since 2017. Her role is to analyze economic data, understand the current economic environment and its impacts on Canadian entrepreneurs, and advise clients. She also writes BDC’s Monthly Economic Letter, a publication that is sent to over 50,000 entrepreneurs and covers economic issues, interest rates, economic growth and credit conditions for businesses.
Before joining BDC, Ms. Elias worked for the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec as a senior analyst on the government credit team within Fixed Income. There, she developed an economic database and a credit rating system for public debt of emerging markets, enabling the recommendation of investment strategies. In addition, Ms. Elias has worked on a wide range of economic, financial and environmental issues for various federal departments, including Finance Canada, Industry Canada, and Transport Canada. She also served as a financial advisor for the board of directors at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, U.K.
Ms. Elias has a bachelor’s degree in economics, with a minor in French literature, from Queen’s University and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Victoria. She has been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) since 2006.
Ms. Elias volunteers her time to support women entrepreneurs in developing countries as a member of the board of directors of Artistri Sud.
