BDC Capital’s Market Development team encourages the growth of Canada’s venture capital (VC) ecosystem by providing non-financial support to general and limited partners (GPs and LPs). We focus on initiatives with a significant impact on scaling and market expansion, which includes:
- Providing access to domain experts and reinforcing GPs’ business networks
- Facilitating peer-to-peer connectivity and knowledge exchange
- Helping improve operational efficiency
We also assist the Government of Canada in the management of the Venture Capital Action Plan (VCAP).
The Market Development team organizes the invitation-only FUNDamental Principals seminars to share best practices in VC fund management. Whether the insight sought is operational or sectoral, the team finds the right experts to help improve the odds of success of our country’s VC fund managers.
Venture Capital Action Plan (VCAP)
The team assisted the Government of Canada with VCAP by providing expertise and advice, and by deploying $390 million of investments into four new Canadian funds of funds and four existing venture funds.
The Government of Canada’s investment was intended to attract private sector capital and steer the country’s venture capital sector on a path to sustainability. In total, the program raised over $1.4 billion in venture capital. Over $1 billion came from a diverse set of investors that included pension funds, high-net-worth individuals, corporations, banks, and the governments of Ontario and Quebec.

The Market Development team is creating GP Academy, a first-of-its-kind program offering leading Canadian GPs the opportunity to establish new business relationships and receive advanced training in operational and management issues. Developed in consultation with the Kauffman Fellows Program, the global leader in venture education, the unique Canadian curriculum is designed to help Canadian VC funds continue to improve their performance.
Corporate Innovation and Venturing Program
BDC Capital is working to engage major Canadian corporations in our country’s innovation ecosystem. To this end, we are designing a Corporate Innovation and Venturing Program to mobilize Canadian corporates and create opportunities for them to interact with start-ups, accelerators and venture funds.
