When Jennifer Harrison began Layers Cakes—a home-based business dedicated to the creation of unique wedding cakes—all she wanted to do was pursue her passion and creativity while fulfilling the dreams of every bride. As word of her creations spread, Harrison was soon operating at capacity and, as customer demand grew, she decided to fulfill her own dream by opening a cupcake boutique in downtown Halifax, transferring the wedding cake business there as well.
Such a venture required funding, and Harrison wasn’t sure what her best move would be—until a friend and local entrepreneur referred her to the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). A knowledgeable BDC Account Manager got together with Harrison and, after conducting a thorough study of the business, provided her with the funding she needed for leasehold improvements and equipment at the new location. As well, BDC provided Harrison with financing for marketing and website redesign. Having first launched her home-based operation in 2004, Harrison opened her cupcake boutique in 2012, and business tripled in the first year alone.
Layers Cakes continues to grow as Harrison adds to her creations—single layer cakes and French macaroons are the latest innovations—to rave customer reviews. Harrison and BDC are currently in discussion regarding a business coaching loan and consulting project. Says Harrison: “BDC is the reason I am here today in our beautiful, modern boutique, baking delicious cupcakes and making people happy every day. Thank you, BDC, for this wonderful opportunity.”
