Since 1985, when it opened for business in a backyard garage, Toronto’s Kooy Brothers has continued to grow. The family-run provider of equipment, products and parts for the commercial landscaping, snow removal and construction industries is now a superstore with 48 staff and thousands of loyal customers across the Greater Toronto Area.
BDC worked with Kooy Brothers in 2000, helping the business purchase a larger commercial property, which led to its exponential growth over the following years. By 2009, the equipment provider had outgrown that premises and needed more space.
The owners found a four-acre property that had been remediated and had been on the market for months. Despite the economic downturn, they purchased the property and then turned to BDC for help in constructing a new superstore. BDC, building on its previous positive experience with Kooy Brothers, provided high leverage financing with flexible terms, including 12-month capital postponements and a 20-year amortization. This enabled the owners to continue investing in their business.
Kooy Brothers opened its new store at the end of 2010. The following year proved to be the best in the company’s history. Since then, the business’s revenues have continued to grow and profits have remained strong.
“My biggest comfort, which I pass on to other business owners, is that BDC is always there to help keep you in business,” says owner Bill Kooy.
