Robert Morais is Assistant Vice President, Portfolio Management – Growth & Transition Capital at BDC. He brings a unique perspective to BDC, having worn many different hats over the course of his career. His experience as an entrepreneur/founder, a leader within a corporate group and as a facilitator of funding solutions for large corporations and SMEs gives him profound insight into the obstacles his clients are facing.
Before joining BDC, Robert raised debt and equity financing as Co-founder/COO of the biotech company DNA Genotek. He also led a consulting group called Strata that looks to match skills to the needs of growing businesses and acted as CFO of the Connelly Group, a consulting firm contributing to the growth of a diverse range of businesses from real estate to indigenous services. At the beginning of his career, Robert gained invaluable experience in transactional business and corporate finance at CIBC, commercial banking at National Bank and international corporate risk management at EDC. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Accounting from the University of Ottawa and has designations as Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI) and Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB).
Passionate about paying it forward, he has volunteered as an advisory board member to the Ontario Minister of Education, chaired a municipal Committee of Adjustment, chaired the Governing Committee of an Entrepreneurship Centre, and currently chairs the Board of Directors for a local Ottawa area hospital. Robert shares BDC’s commitment to finding solutions for BDC’s clients and helping the greater community.
