Entrepreneur challenge
Wuxly was founded in 2015 when James Yurichuk set out to make his Brazilian girlfriend (and future wife) her first Canadian winter coat. From there, the former professional football player grew his outerwear business to 7-digit revenue in less than five years with a unique value proposition: keeping people warm sustainably with military-grade materials. In 2020, Wuxly increased its production capacity 50 times to become a key contributor to the pandemic response. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Yurichuk, a fourth generation Ukrainian Canadian, stepped up once again. Wuxly started supplying jackets, sleeping bags and female combat uniforms to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A certified B Corp and long-time BDC client, in 2024 the fast-growing company had reached a critical inflection point and was looking to create a strategic roadmap for future growth.
BDC expertise
BDC’s strategy experts worked with Wuxly’s management team through a series of workshops in early 2024. The strategic planning exercise unveiled opportunities for the company to become a leader in the defence sector by leveraging its 10-year expertise in manufacturing performance-engineered outerwear. BDC’s consultants recommended expanding the team, by hiring smart textile engineers and garment scientists to develop unique military clothing appropriate for extreme combat conditions and harsh environments like the Arctic.
