Derek Colfer is Head of Digital Innovation for Visa Canada. He has more than 15 years of digital and mobile experience in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Prior to returning to Canada in 2002, Derek worked at in London, England. He gained a considerable amount of experience in text, mobile web and location-based mobile innovations through his engagements with several U.K. clients including Heineken, Barclays, Channel 4 and Deutsche Bank.

In 2002, Derek co-founded Jambo Mobile, an award winning mobile software development company. In this position, Derek played a key role in building and delivering innovative mobile solutions in both the U.S., and Canadian markets for Pfizer, Visa Inc., P&G, Disney and Virgin Mobile. Jambo Mobile was acquired in 2007.

Derek began his career at Visa in 2010 as a Senior Business Leader within the Global Mobile Product Innovation team. During this time, he led several successful mobile commerce initiatives including Canada’s first commercial near field communication (NFC) deployment in 2012.

In his current position, Derek leads Visa Canada’s digital innovation product team. Working closely with the global digital team headquartered in San Francisco, his responsibilities continue to encompass all things digital (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay) as well as Visa’s recently launched Visa Developer and ID Intelligence Programs.

Derek is a frequent contributor to the digital innovation landscape. In addition to regular media engagements, he has been called as an expert witness on emerging digital payments systems by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, as well as by the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce regarding digital currencies.

Derek obtained his undergraduate degree from Bishop’s University in Quebec and a master’s degree in International Relations from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He is a terrible poker player and an even worse golfer. He loves the great outdoors and spends his free time outside as much as possible with his wife and two boys.
