How to ace an interview

Tips to help you prove you’re the ideal candidate.

1. Before the interview

  • Take the time to learn as much as possible about BDC (visit our website, read what people are saying about us in the news and social media, ask BDC employees to tell you about their experience, etc.).
  • Print the job posting and make a list of all the factors that could play in your favour (educational background, work experience, technical knowledge, leadership, transferable skills, etc.).

2. On the day of the interview

  • Dress professionally.
  • Bring a copy of your resume and any other relevant documents.
  • Arrive a bit early and get into “interview mode” as soon as you enter the building.
  • Even if you’re nervous (which is normal), maintain a positive attitude, do not interrupt the person speaking, listen carefully to the questions, express yourself clearly and restate frequently what you’ve been asked (“If I understand correctly, you’re looking for that skill to...”).
  • Highlight your skills and clearly explain how they set you apart from the other candidates and how they will help you succeed in this job.

3. After the interview

  • Follow up as recommended, without being too insistent.
  • Be patient: Sometimes the recruiting process takes more time than expected.

What you should absolutely avoid during the interview

  • Chewing gum.
  • Forgetting to silence your electronic devices.
  • Criticizing your previous employers.
  • Ignoring your body language.
  • Interrupting the interviewer.
  • Giving overly long answers.
