BDC invests in private equity funds targeting the following investment objectives:

• Venture capital investments focused on companies developing products and/or services with significant intellectual property and the intent of commercializing them on a global basis
• In the fields of life sciences, information technology, telecom and clean technologies
• at all stages of financing
• Generally focused on all or a particular region of Canada

The typical fund and fund manager selection criteria are as follows:

• Minimum fund size: $100 million
• The fund structure will be a Canadian limited partnerships with standard terms and conditions
• The fund managers should meet the following criteria:
  
  
  • Established fund management team with at least two senior principals
  • Operational experience in technology companies
  • No less than 5 years successful technology investing experience with several exits each demonstrating a superior personal track record in the Venture Capital industry
  • Networked with international industrial players and international Venture Capital funds
  • Wholly-based in Canada and be completely independent of other organizations
  • The management team must contribute a significant amount to the fund
  • Devote 100% of their time to the operation of the fund
  
  
• Funds must have a detailed business plan setting out their strategy and competitive advantage
• BDC must play a significant role within the investor group and requires Co-investment rights
